ChartBand for teachers and students
Practice the tune from the lesson, from the same page, with a band — between lessons, at any tempo.
For students
- Your own page. Practice from the lead sheet you'll read in the ensemble, with the bar being played lit up. Your teacher's pencil marks stay where they were written.
- Slow it down, loop it. Take the bridge at half tempo, loop the four bars that keep tripping you up, then speed up.
- Any key. Move the tune to any key, or pick B♭, E♭ or F and the chords show in your key; the band stays in concert pitch, like the rest of the ensemble.
- Take your part out. Bassists mute the bass, pianists mute the piano and follow the voicings on the keyboard instead.
- Learn the voicings. Set the piano to simple chords, inversions, rootless or drop 2 voicings and watch the keyboard light them up as the band plays.
For teachers
- Assign a tune from your book. Students photograph the page they already own; the app reads it on their device.
- Send a chord chart. Share a tune's chords and form — never the page, never the melody.
- No accounts, no data. Students don't sign up for anything, and the app collects no personal data. See Privacy.
Coming: a player for your own site
We're working on a version of the band you can embed in your own website or course, so students can practice your charts right on the lesson page. It isn't ready, and there's no date yet. If you'd like to hear when it is, write to help@chartband.com.
What it isn't
ChartBand isn't a course in reading music, and it doesn't listen to or grade the student's playing. It's a rhythm section that reads the chart in front of them.
Price
Each student needs the app on their own iPhone or iPad: 7-day free trial, then $9.99/year (renews until cancelled), or $19.99 one-time.
